African Crowned Crane birds are known to dance during a courtship. These beautiful large birds are often regarded as a symbol of peace. In this painting, Soul of Africa, I imagined them dancing to the beat of African drums during a beautiful sunset.

Inkosi Edansa is Zulu for “the dancing king” which describes the beautiful and dramatic mating ritual of the African Crowned Crane. I honor these magnificent birds by painting their images on their own feathers. I love that they mate for life and that the males and females are almost identical in coloration unlike most bird species. Mostly found in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa, these huge birds have wingspans up to six feet.

For many, the sight of a cardinal holds special meaning, sometimes evoking emotional or spiritual feelings. The vibrant red bird is an uplifting, happy sign that those we have lost will live forever, so long as we keep their memory alive in our hearts.
Cardinals can also represent luck, manifestation, devotion, setting boundaries, loyalty and domestic harmony.

I am so impressed with indigenous art of Africa. On the border of Ethiopia and Sudan lives the Surma Nomadic Tribe. Here I honor their tradition of body art that includes face painting and adornment with flowers on headdresses. These rare African Crown Crane feathers were legally obtained almost 40 years ago by a local rare feather collector who retired and passed them down to me. I am honored to put African body art and rare crane feathers together in my art.
