If we see the presence of a cardinal in the moments when we feel the absence of a loved one and are feeling nostalgic, we don’t just see the bird, we also see the soul of those who have departed but who will continue to be present here with us. They follow the light as do sunflowers to show them the path to inner illumination.

One afternoon, as I walked along, I encountered a striking, majestic buffalo. The sun was beginning its slow descent, casting a warm light onto the scene. The buffalo stood motionless—thoughtful and serene—as if peacefully taking in the cool, pristine freshness of the snow that surrounded him. The buffalo represents strength and the ability to overcome various obstacles that we can encounter in our lives, such as storms and a long cold winter.

The coyote represents the spirit of life. They are clever, lively, tenacious, cunning and intelligent animals. They have the nobility of a wolf and the cunning of a fox. The coyote reminds me that we should smile, be more fun and try to find the positive in every difficulty that arises at every moment of our lives.

The Spotted Towhee’s beautiful songs remind us that during our growth in life, both physically and spiritually, we should try to maintain our balance and harmony with nature. The towhee lives most of its time on the ground. We too should always keep our feet on the ground and stay true our ourselves and accept changes with grace and courage. This bird symbolizes stability, resilience and connection with our roots and helps us adapt to our life changes.

This 3-panel painting honors the hummingbirds found in Costa Rica. These beautiful tiny birds are considered spiritual messengers and often symbolize joy, beauty and life energy. It is believed that their presence can be a sign of good luck and balance in life. The tree where they are perched is a Savannah Oak also known as a rosy trumpet tree due its beautiful flowers. The tree is common throughout Costa Rica. It sheds all its leaves to channel the little energy it has into the production of flowers, fruits and seeds.

While walking my dog through the pinon trees, I heard squawking and croaking in a nearby tree. Sitting on the same branch was a raven loudly screaming at a great horned owl that was doing his best to ignore him. While ravens are sometimes symbolized as keepers of ancient wisdom, I believe this particular raven would have been wise to control himself and listen to a message from higher wisdom of a great bird.

Guacamaya is the Mayan name for macaw or thick-billed parrot which is a common bird in my home country of Costa Rica, Central and South America. Their feathers have been highly desired dating back to the pre-Columbian civilizations such as the Incas. They were often used as adornments in ceremonies. Many species are now endangered and even extinct. They are now protected. I honor their beauty and hope for their continued recovery as a work of living art.
