From that blessing sprang the first blanket flowers (Gaillardia), a living tribute to the weaver’s generosity.
The story of the Blanket Flower reminds me that kindness and perseverance are essential to a meaningful life. When we help others, we discover the strength to face life’s challenges. And by staying the course, we can achieve what once seemed impossible.

]]>A bee kept flying into my studio bothering me while I was painting. I shooed it away several times but it kept coming back. I followed it out the door and it landed in these hollyhocks growing alongside my studio gallery. I watched it buzz around in the flowers and realized that these tall majestic flowers are so hardy that they grow in the worst soil and conditions with little to no water. They showed me that something that seems impossible can be possible and beautiful. Do you see the bee?

This sunset reminded me of the natural beauty of New Mexico and the sacred symbol of the sun for the Zia people. Four is a sacred number of the Zia repeated in the points radiating from the circle representing the four aspects of the compass, the seasons, the periods of each day, the stages of life and the sacred aspects one must develop.

I love the stunning desert landscape and the changing colors of the rock formations throughout the day. This scene is just north of Abiquiu, New Mexico and the Ghost Ranch where famed artist Georgia O’Keeffe called home.

The Apache tribes considered cottonwood trees a symbol of the sun, and some northern Mexican tribes associated cottonwoods with the afterlife, using cottonwood boughs in funeral rituals. The landscape in New Mexico during the fall season comes alive with these beautiful symbols of the sun.

Ospreys, Canada Geese, Bald Eagles, Grebes, Eagle Owls and Belted Kingfishers are just a few of the birds that can be spotted around the lake. Maloya is a form of music, song and dance. Here, at sunset, you see a silhouette of some of these beautiful feathered creatures singing to the lake and dancing in air against a colorful sky.

The Prickly Pear cactus produces an edible fruit in addition to its colorful blooms and is used throughout the Southwest in salads, smoothies and salsa. The Cholla cactus buds are a wonderful source of calcium commonly consumed by nursing mothers. But be careful of those spines. They are sharp and detach easily. Beautiful but protective of their blossoms and fruit.
