For many Native American cultures, the tipi is more than a simple shelter; it holds deep spiritual significance, serving as a sacred space that embodies unity, a connection to nature, and profound spiritual traditions. It is often seen as a representation of the womb of Mother Earth, offering protection and balance.
Each pole of a tipi carries symbolic meaning, representing core values and virtues. The circular structure formed by the poles reflects the interconnectedness of all life. These symbolic values include discipline, respect, humility, happiness, love, faith, kinship, cleanliness, gratitude, sharing, strength, responsible child-rearing, hope, ultimate protection, and control flaps.
The introduction of horses revolutionized the lives of early Native American tribes, particularly those of the Great Plains. Horses enhanced their ability to hunt bison, travel vast distances, and engage in warfare, profoundly reshaping their culture, economy, and social organization.

I wondered what Valentino would like me to paint. I stopped to take a picture of the beautiful sunset when suddenly a single lightning bolt came out of one of those few clouds above the sunset. At that moment I had my answer. I saw the Lightning Boy painting.

Cardinals can also represent luck, manifestation, devotion, setting boundaries, loyalty and domestic harmony.

When they returned to their villages, they performed dances to show how they fought their enemy and give praise for their victory. This young warrior dancer is proudly wearing eagle feathers handed down to him by his great grandfather which he uses to give him strength and power in honoring this important cultural and spiritual dance. He meditates before he dances.

I imagined wild horses running down a river after a long awaited rain storm. And when I looked up at the clouds I saw a baby angel. Do you see him?

It was first settled around AD 1325 and was the northernmost of the twelve Tiwa villages. These prosperous native farmers’ ancestors had lived in this area for thousands of years. I find it interesting that kivas are round so spirits do not get stuck in the corners of a room.

]]>Hoop Dancing is a show dance performed by many tribes across North America. But its origin is credited to a young Tony White Cloud of the Jemez Pueblo here in New Mexico around 1930. The hoop represents and honors the never-ending circle of life. We start at the end and end at the beginning in the same exact way for everyone. Modern hoop dancers can use 20 or more hoops during their dance. Originally a male-only dance form, women started competing in dance competitions in 1994. In 1997, a young Navajo woman won the Hoop Dance World Championship. This Hoop Dancer painting honors Native American women dancers and pays respect towards the sacredness of this dance.

Here, Orenda hugs a tree to help rid herself of bad energy and absorb from the roots the love of Mother Earth. Orenda means ‘Magic Power’ in Iroquois.
